Module 1 Concepts of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) -  ECDL / ICDL Syllabus 5

Requires the candidate to understand the main concepts of ICT at a general level, and to know about the different parts of a computer.  The candidate shall be able to:

  • Understand what hardware is, know about factors that affect computer performance and know about peripheral devices.
  • Understand what software is and give examples of common applications software and operating system software.
  • Understand how information networks are used within computing, and be aware of the different options to connect to the Internet.
  • Understand what Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is and give examples of its practical applications in everyday life.
  • Understand health and safety and environmental issues in relation to using computers.
  • Recognize important security issues associated with using computers.
  • Recognize important legal issues in relation to copyright and data protection associated with using computers. More details

Module 2 Using the Computer and Managing Files - ECDL / ICDL Syllabus 5

Requires the candidate to demonstrate competence in running and managing a personal computer.  The candidate shall be able to:

  • Use the main features of the operating system including adjusting the main computer settings and using built-in help features.
  • Operate effectively around the computer desktop and work effectively in a graphical user environment.
  • Know about the main concepts of file management and be able to efficiently organize files and folders so that they are easy to identify and find.
  • Use utility software to compress and extract large files and use anti-virus software to protect against computer viruses.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use simple text editing and print tools available within the operating system. More details

Module 3 Word Processing - ECDL / ICDL Syllabus 5

Requires the candidate to demonstrate the ability to use a word processing application to create everyday letters and documents.  The candidate shall be able to:

  • Work with documents and save them in different file formats.
  • Choose built-in options such as the Help function to enhance productivity.
  • Create and edit small-sized word processing documents that will be ready to
    share and distribute.
  • Apply different formats to documents to enhance them before distribution and recognize good practice in choosing the appropriate formatting options.
  • Insert tables, images and drawn objects into documents.
  • Prepare documents for mail merge operations.
  • Adjust document page settings and check and correct spelling before finally printing documents. More details

Module 4 Spreadsheets - ECDL / ICDL Syllabus 5

Requires the candidate to understand the concept of spreadsheets and to demonstrate an ability to use a spreadsheet to produce accurate work outputs.  The candidate shall be able to:

  • Work with spreadsheets and save them in different file formats.
  • Choose built-in options such as the Help function within the application to enhance productivity.
  • Enter data into cells and use good practice in creating lists. Select, sort and copy, move and delete data.
  • Edit rows and columns in a worksheet. Copy, move, delete and appropriately rename worksheets.
  • Create mathematical and logical formulas using standard spreadsheet functions. Use good practice in formula creation and recognize error values in formulas.
  • Format numbers and text content in a spreadsheet.
  • Choose, create and format charts to communicate information meaningfully.
  • Adjust spreadsheet page settings and check and correct spreadsheet content before finally printing spreadsheets. More details

Module 5 Using Databases - ECDL / ICDL Syllabus 5

Requires the candidate to understand the concept of a database and demonstrate competence in using a database.  The candidate shall be able to:
  • Understand what a database is and how it is organized and operated.
  • Create a simple database and view the database content in various modes.
  • Create a table, define and modify fields and their properties; enter and edit data in a table.
  • Sort and filter a table or form; create, modify and run queries to retrieve specific information from a database.
  • Understand what a form is and create a form to enter, modify and delete records and data in records.
  • Create routine reports and prepare outputs ready for distribution. More details

Module 6 Presentation - ECDL / ICDL Syllabus 5

Requires the candidate to demonstrate competence in using presentation software.  The candidate shall be able to:

  • Work with presentations and save them in different file formats.
  • Choose built-in options such as the Help function within the application to enhance productivity.
  • Understand different presentation views and when to use them, choose different slide layouts and designs.
  • Enter, edit and format text in presentations. Recognize good practice in applying unique titles to slides.
  • Choose, create and format charts to communicate information meaningfully.
  • Insert and edit pictures, images and drawn objects.
  • Apply animation and transition effects to presentations and check and correct presentation content before finally printing and giving presentations. More details

Module 7 Web Browsing and Communication- ECDL / ICDL Syllabus 5

Divided into two sections. The first section, Web Browsing, requires the candidate to know about the Internet and to use a web browsing application.  The candidate shall be able to:

  • Understand what the Internet is and common terms associated with it. Be aware of some security considerations when using the Internet. Accomplish everyday web browsing tasks including changing browser settings.
  • Search for information and complete and submit web-based forms.
  • Save web pages and download files from the web. Copy web content into a document. More details

The second section, Communication, requires the candidate to understand some of the concepts of electronic mail (e-mail) and know about other communication options.  The candidate shall be able to:

  • Understand what e-mail is and know some advantages and disadvantages of its use. Be aware of other communication options.
  • Be aware of network etiquette and security considerations when using e-mail.
  • Create, spell check and send e-mail. Reply to and forward e-mail, handle file attachments and print an e-mail.
  • Be aware of ways to enhance productivity when working with e-mail software. Organize and manage e-mail. More details

ECDL Syllabus Version 4

ECDL Module 1 Concepts of Information Technology (IT), requires the candidate to have an understanding of some of the main concepts of IT at a general level. The candidate is required to understand the make-up of a personal computer in terms of hardware and software and to understand some of the concepts of Information Technology (IT) such as data storage and memory. The candidate shall also understand how information networks are used within computing and be aware of the uses of computer-based software applications in everyday life. The candidate shall appreciate health and safety issues as well as some environmental factors involved in using computers. The candidate shall be aware of some of the important security and legal issues associated with using computers.

ECDL Module 2 Using the Computer and Managing Files, requires the candidate to demonstrate knowledge and competence in using the common functions of a personal computer and its operating system. The candidate shall be able to adjust main settings, use the built-in help features and deal with a non-responding application. He or she shall be able to operate effectively within the desktop environment and work with desktop icons and windows. The candidate shall be able to manage and organize files and directories/folders, and know how to duplicate, move and delete files and directories/folders, and compress and extract files. The candidate shall also understand what a computer virus is and be able to use virus-scanning software. The candidate shall demonstrate the ability to use simple editing tools and print management facilities available within the operating system.

ECDL Module 3 Word Processing, requires the candidate to demonstrate the ability to use a word processing application on a computer. The candidate shall be able to accomplish everyday tasks associated with creating, formatting and finishing small sized word processing documents ready for distribution. He or she shall also be able to duplicate and move text within and between documents. The candidate shall demonstrate competence in using some of the features associated with word processing applications such as creating standard tables, using pictures and images within a document, and using mail merge tools.

ECDL Module 4 Spreadsheets, requires the candidate to understand the concept of spreadsheets and to demonstrate the ability to use a spreadsheet application on a computer. The candidate shall understand and be able to accomplish tasks associated with developing, formatting, modifying and using a spreadsheet8 of limited scope ready for distribution. He or she shall also be able to generate and apply standard mathematical and logical formulas using standard formulas and functions. The candidate shall demonstrate competence in creating and formatting graphs/charts.

ECDL Module 5 Database, requires the candidate to understand some of the main concepts of databases and demonstrate the ability to use a database on a computer. The candidate shall be able to create and modify tables, queries, forms and reports, and prepare outputs ready for distribution. The candidate shall be able to relate tables and to retrieve and manipulate information from a database by using query and sort tools available in the package.

ECDL Module 6 Presentation, requires the candidate to demonstrate competence in using presentation tools on a computer. The candidate shall be able to accomplish tasks such as creating, formatting, modifying and preparing presentations using different slide layouts for display and printed distribution. He or she shall also be able to duplicate and move text, pictures, images and charts within the presentation and between presentations. The candidate shall demonstrate the ability to accomplish common operations with images, charts and drawn objects and to use various slide show effects.

ECDL Module 7 Information and Communication, is divided in two sections. The first section, Information, requires the candidate to understand some of the concepts and terms associated with using the Internet, and to appreciate some of the security considerations. The candidate shall also be able to accomplish common Web search tasks using a Web browsing application and available search engine tools. He or she shall be able to bookmark Web sites, and to print Web pages and search outputs. The candidate shall be able to navigate within and complete Web-based forms. In the second section, Communication, the candidate is required to understand some of the concepts of electronic mail (e-mail), together with having an appreciation of some of the security considerations associated with using e-mail. The candidate shall also demonstrate the ability to use e-mail software to send and receive messages, and to attach files to mail messages. The candidate shall be able to organize and manage message folders/directories within e-mail software.

ECDL Advanced AM3

ECDL Module AM3 Word Processing, Advanced – Level, requires the candidate to use the word processing application to produce what are deemed to be advanced word processing document outputs. The candidate shall be able to operate effectively at more than a basic level of competence and be able to produce advanced word processing outputs, illustrating sophisticated typographical, formatting and layout presentations, including tables, forms or graphics. ECDL Advanced AM4

ECDL Module AM4 Spreadsheets, Advanced - Level, requires the candidate to use the spreadsheet application to produce what are deemed to be advanced spreadsheet outputs. The candidate shall be able to operate effectively at more than a basic level of competence and be able to edit and enhance numeric, text and graphical data and to sort, query and link data. The candidate shall be able to carry out advanced formatting and presentation operations on charts and graphs. The candidate shall be able to use functions such as those associated with logical, statistical or mathematical operations. ECDL Advanced AM5

ECDL Module AM5 Database, Advanced - Level, requires the candidate to operate effectively at more than a basic level of competence and be able to realize much of the potential of the database application. The candidate shall be able to use the database to organize, extract, view and report on data using what are deemed to be advanced data management skills. The candidate shall understand the variety of ways that data can be related and organized. In addition the candidate shall be able to run and record simple macros and to import, export and link data.

ECDL Advanced AM6

ECDL Module AM6 Presentation, Advanced - Level, requires the candidate to understand some of the principle areas to consider when planning and designing presentations. The candidate shall be able to operate effectively at more than a basic level of competence and to use the presentation application to produce what are deemed to be advanced presentation outputs. The candidate shall be able to realize much of the potential of the presentation tool and produce outputs using advanced formatting and layout techniques and the use of multimedia effects. The candidate shall be able to create advanced charts / graphs and be able to enhance the presentation by using drawing and image tools to modify drawn objects and images. The candidate shall also be able to create and use macros within the presentation application.
